Hemiolia Records’ licensing deal with Ermitage Distribution is, for tape fans, the gift that just keeps on giving!
Last year saw the release of a raft of seminal jazz albums on copy master tape, and now 2024 is kicking off with another: Somethin’ Else by American jazz saxophonist Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley. The album was originally recorded in March 1958 and released on vinyl (mono and stereo editions) later that year by Blue Note.
Discogs lists more than 200 subsequent releases by Blue Note and others, so the album has clearly been immensely popular and in constant demand ever since! (The first Ermitage release was in 2012, on 180g vinyl).
At the time of the recording, Adderley was a member of Miles Davis’ group and Davis plays trumpet here in Adderley’s quintet, alongside Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Art Blakey on drums.
There’s a nice review of the album on Miles Davis’ website at www.milesdavis.com/albums/cannonball-adderley-somethin-else. As I read it I find myself imagining how all of the details being described are going to sound on tape. I can almost hear them already…!
