New release from IPI – Stan Getz Quintet II

US-based International Phonograph Inc. (IPI) specializes in recording and producing “great jazz at the highest sound quality”.

I got a heads-up from them last week that they’ve added a new, special Stan Getz recording to their master tape collection, which is from the same period as their earlier Stan Getz Quintet, January 1980 – New Haven, Connecticut.

Here’s what they say: “The playing is different and exceptional, as you would expect. And the sound is very natural, as it’s done with only two mics. Stan Getz is nearly a household name in jazz.  Here, on tape, he is captured playing with a young, vibrant group of musicians.

“More than 40 years later, the pianist on this performance, Andy LaVerne, reviewed the playing and said: “This was one of Stan’s best bands, and his playing was at a peak. These recordings capture a very under-represented period of Stan’s career. I like the live/unprocessed sonics.”

“Indeed, the music is captured with only two microphones, despite the group being a quintet -with Stan Getz on tenor sax; Chuck Loeb on 12-string acoustic guitar and electric guitar; Andy LaVerne on piano, Fender Rhodes, minimoog and ARP string ensemble; Brian Bromberg on acoustic and electric bass, and Victor Jones on drums.  This period of Stan’s playing is very underrepresented outside these taped sessions. Hence this is a rare, historical find that is not to be missed.”

Sounds very tempting to me!

The details don’t seem to be on their website yet, so I’m including them here for anyone that’s interested in finding out more.
