Depending on your musical tastes, you may or may not know American DJ and record producer Kerri Chandler. Either way, he’s often referred to with adjectives like ‘legendary’ and ‘pioneering’, having been one of the key movers and shakers in house music for some 30+ years.
These days, he refers to tape as his ‘most cherished medium’ and is considered to be one of its fiercest champions.
A few years ago, Chandler started doing reel-to-reel based sets as part of his club nights (there’s more info and a link to one of the live shows in an earlier blog: Discovering DJ Kerri Chandler’s reel-to-reel set in London).
Now, he’s made a short documentary film in collaboration with Resident Advisor, the online platform for electronic music, artists and events. Last summer, he travelled to Normandy, France, to visit tape manufacturers RTM and explore the intricate processes behind the making of magnetic tape.
It’s a great watch, Chandler’s a natural presenter (and I’m stoked to be credited as a script editor!)
