Rhino Hi-Fi announces new Joni Mitchell ‘Blue’ on Audiophile Editions tape & vinyl – out July 10 – preorders now

Woah! Rhino High Fidelity is at it again folks – this press release just in:

LOS ANGELES – Joni Mitchell’s masterpiece Blue celebrates its 55-year anniversary today with new audiophile editions from Rhino High Fidelity on reel-to-reel and vinyl.

Blue (Rhino High Fidelity R2R) was duplicated in real time from a 1:1 copy of the original flat analog master tape. The result is a master-quality listening experience that captures the full dynamics of the recording without the surface noise or groove wear of vinyl. The 15 i.p.s. half-track 1/4” tape is produced to the IEC equalization standard on premium RTM LPR90 tape stock and stored on a 10.5” metal reel. The Reel-to-Reel edition is limited to 350 copies worldwide and available exclusively at Rhino.com.

There’s also a vinyl edition:

Blue (Rhino High Fidelity)  was cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal in Germany. It comes in a glossy gatefold sleeve with newly written liner notes. The album is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively at Rhino.com and select Warner Music Group stores internationally.

Released June 22, 1971, Blue established a new benchmark for the singer-songwriter movement, reaching #15 on the Billboard 200 while earning platinum certification. Written and produced entirely by Mitchell, the album offered an unprecedented level of emotional transparency as she navigated the aftermath of her relationship with Graham Nash. Captured during intimate sessions at A&M Studios in Hollywood, the tracks are stripped of heavy orchestration. Instead, the stark arrangements rely primarily on piano, acoustic guitar, and Appalachian dulcimer, creating a singular work that feels less like a performance and more like a confession.

Today, Blue is universally recognized by music critics as one of the greatest albums ever made. It remains a towering achievement in recorded music, having been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry in 2000. Rolling Stone ranked it #3 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”—the highest entry ever achieved by a female artist. More than half a century after its release, the album’s radical vulnerability and harmonic brilliance continue to influence and inspire generations of artists.

Rhino High Fidelity continues to tap into Warner Music’s vast catalog, introducing reissues of seminal albums across genres—from rock and pop to jazz, soul, and beyond. Each title pairs uncompromising audio with archival-grade packaging, honoring the album’s original intent in both sound and design.
